Speaker’s Agreement

We appreciate your interest in inviting the Colored Conventions Project (CCP) to join in your event. We are particularly grateful for the opportunity to engage with other public, digital, and community projects with overlapping interests. As a collective project, we are intentional in the principles that guide our model and work, and we are happy to share them with you as we discuss the possibility of us joining you.

Our Project Model

CCP operates as a collective that serves as an online hub that brings buried African American history to digital life. Our work grapples with social justice activism in scholarship and research by offering an opportunity for deep engagement with 19th-century Black political organizing. Each of our team leaders brings extensive expertise within Digital Humanities and scholarship. We value, protect and respect the contributions of members of all backgrounds. CCP elevates and lifts up the work of members of all “ranks,” colors, genders and sexual identities.

Project Principles

The full list is at https://oldsite.coloredconventions.org/about/principles/

Principle 1: CCP seeks to enact collective organizing principles and values that were modeled by the Colored Conventions Movement.

Principle 4: Mirroring the Colored Conventions’ focus on labor rights and Black economic health, our project seeks structures and support that honor the work members bring to the project through equitable compensation, acknowledgment, and attribution.

Please help us honor our project principles in the following ways:

  • We present collectively. We ask that invitations include at least two members and that your institution cover the cost of their food and board. We can sometimes pay for the second invitee’s transportation.
  • We ask that visiting CCP members be treated with the respect that would be extended to faculty directors. These members are experts with extensive experience both in their areas of leadership and in the collective and collaborative model under which we operate.
  • We ask that honorarium-granting invitations offer an additional contribution to the project itself to reflect our collective work. We prefer this in the form of a contribution. If that’s not possible, your institution can add it to members’ honorariums and they will contribute to the project directly.
  • We ask that your team please include @CCP_Org and #DigBLK in promotions when appropriate.
  • We ask that your team makes share:
    • photo files (in JPG or TIFF) and videos (MP4) by cloud link or direct transfer to the email info@coloredconventions.org.
    • promotional items (flyers, email communications, etc.). We would like to help you promote this event! You can tag us @CCP_org or send us a link.

  • If this is an invited keynote or talk, we ask your team to review the outreach and organizing suggestions below.

Promotion and Documentation of the Event

  1. Please have someone from your team create a Google doc and make sure it’s up and running to capture ideas and group work during the workshop.
  2. Please have someone from your team set up a Google sheet for future reference that includes names of participants, institutions, institutional roles, social media info and email addresses that will allow you to export addresses and create a list-serve. Make sure to add those who didn’t sign up in advance to this sheet. This is a crucial step. Make sure to add coloredconventions@gmail.com as well as the contact info of CCP members who are visiting.
  3. Please have a designated social media person who is in charge of taking photos and tweeting them out with appropriate hashtags, etc. (@CCP_org).
  4. Please ensure someone from the home institution is responsible for:
    1. Cleaning up the Google doc after the workshop
    2. Setting up a hashtag such as #CCPNOLA #CCPTenn #CCP
    3. Setting up a list-serve or Slack channel, etc.
