A Gathering at the Crossroads Monument at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

The A Gathering at the Crossroads monument in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is a bronze sculpture commemorating African American history and civil rights. Located near the State Capitol, it features life-size statues of four influential activists—Thomas Morris Chester, Jacob T. Comptom, William Howard Day, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper—depicted in conversation about the 1870 passage of the Fifteenth Amendment. The statues surround a pedestal showcasing a 3D rendering of the Old Eighth Ward, a diverse neighborhood demolished in the early 1900s. The monument also honors 100 local advocates for equality and preserves the memory of the ward’s destroyed churches, synagogues, businesses, and schools.
